The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has issued a forecast of notable weather trends in the next month (from December 21, 2025 to January 20, 2026).
The 2025 storm season is likely to be over
From the beginning of 2025 to now, there have been 21 storms/tropical depressions active in the East Sea (including 15 storms and 6 tropical depressions), breaking the record previously set in 2017 with 20 storms.
According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Hoa - Deputy Head of the Climate Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, it is forecasted that from now until January 20, 2026, there is little chance of storms and tropical depressions appearing in the East Sea.
According to the average data of many years from December 21 last year to January 20 next year, the number of storms/tropical depressions in the East Sea is 0.5 storms and the number of storms/tropical depressions making landfall in Vietnam is 0.1.
Notable weather information in the coming time is the activity of the northeast monsoon. Mr. Hoa said that during the forecast period, cold air tends to operate weaker than the average of many years but is still likely to cause severe cold spells, mainly concentrated in January 2026.
It is forecasted that in the next month, the average temperature in most areas across the country will be approximately the same as the average of many years; in the North and North Central regions, it will be 0.5 - 1 degree Celsius higher, in some places over 1 degree Celsius higher than the average of many years in the same period.
Strong winds caused by cold air can cause large waves at sea and affect the activities of ships. Thunderstorms, tornadoes, and lightning can negatively affect traffic, production, and public health.
In addition, it is necessary to be on guard against the possibility of severe cold spells causing the lowest temperature to drop sharply, especially in the northern highland areas that are likely to be accompanied by frost, ice and fog.
Central Central and South Central regions to prevent widespread rain
Regarding rainfall trends, according to the meteorological agency, during the forecast period, total rainfall nationwide is generally 5 - 15mm lower than the average of many years. In particular, the provinces from Quang Tri to Da Nang city, coastal provinces from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak and northern Khanh Hoa have total rainfall 15 - 40mm lower than the average of many years, some places are lower.
During the period from December 21, 2025 to January 21, 2026, it is forecasted that the Northern region, Thanh Hoa and the north of Nghe An will have total rainfall ranging from 15 - 30mm. The southern area of Nghe An - Ha Tinh will have total rainfall from 40 - 80mm. The area from Quang Tri to Da Nang city, the coastal areas from Quang Ngai to Dak Lak provinces and northern Khanh Hoa will have total rainfall from 60 - 130mm (some places over 130mm). The Southern region has a total rainfall of 20 - 40mm; the remaining areas have a total rainfall of 5 - 15mm.
"Provinces and cities from Quang Tri to Da Nang, the east of Quang Ngai province to Gia Lai are likely to experience widespread rains" - Mr. Hoa warned.
On a national scale, there is a continued possibility of dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind.
In the context of climate change, weather and climate are becoming increasingly complex with many dangerous and extreme forms such as short-term heavy rain, flash floods, landslides, etc.
Therefore, the meteorological agency recommends that authorities at all levels and people regularly update and integrate forecast and warning information on hydrometeorology in short-term bulletins of 1 - 3 days, to promptly adjust production plans and appropriate response plans, especially appropriate reservoir operation plans, ensure safety of works and downstream areas, along with ensuring safety for production and people's lives.
