Floods in the North are very rare.
The flood situation in the North is becoming more complicated. In the past hours, floods on many rivers in the Northern region have risen above alert level 3.
Mr. Mai Van Khiem - Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, Directorate of Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting - said that heavy rains in the past few days have caused a lot of water in the lakes (including Thac Ba Lake). Since last night, the water level flowing into Thac Ba Lake has decreased compared to the level of the previous 2 days.
"We assess that the water level is still at a dangerous level, but the pressure has decreased compared to yesterday. The possibility of rain in the midland and mountainous areas has decreased, but the situation is still complicated," said Mr. Khiem.
According to Mr. Khiem, the flood situation on the Red River - Thai Binh River area from last night until now is on the rise. By 10am this morning, the water level of the Red River in Hanoi had reached 11.02m, about 0.48m lower than alert level 3.
"Comparing past data, the flood level on the Red River in Hanoi rose above 11m in 2004. 20 years ago, the highest water level on the Red River in Hanoi was 11.04m" - Mr. Khiem provided data.
According to the Director of the Meteorological Agency, in the coming hours, the water level in the upstream will still change slowly, so it will still tend to increase but slowly. With this water level, the risk will be related to the downstream.
"We assess that the water level downstream of the river, especially low-lying areas and riverside areas, could reach alert level 3, or even above alert level 3," said Mr. Khiem.
Further assessing this flood, according to Mr. Khiem, this is a rare flood. From statistical data on most of the Red River, Thao River, and Lo River, the measuring points are all above alert level 3. The measuring points on the Thao River in Lao Cai and Yen Bai have exceeded historical values.
Risk of prolonged flooding in Hanoi suburbs
Mr. Vo Van Hoa - Director of the Hydrometeorological Station of the Northern Delta and Midlands, Directorate of Hydrometeorology said that some provinces are at risk of flooding for the next 1-2 days due to the impact of rain.
"In Thai Nguyen, the flood is likely to last for the next 1-2 days. The characteristics of the flood in Thai Nguyen have never happened before in history. In Bac Giang, the communes adjacent to the Thuong and Cau rivers are still flooded. The water level in these rivers is still rising in the coming days and is at alert level 3. The characteristics of the flood in Bac Giang are similar to those in 2008 and 1986, which caused a lot of damage," said Mr. Hoa.
According to Mr. Hoa, flooding has occurred along the Da River, Duong River, and Day River. In the next 6 hours, the water level on the main river systems may increase, reaching 11.3m - about 20cm below alert level 3, and then may level off. Currently, the river water level will depend entirely on the rainfall and the regulation of the hydroelectric reservoir.
In the intra-provincial rivers such as Bui River, Tich River, and Ca Lo River, the water level is also maintaining alert level 3, causing water to rise and overflow into the inner city area.
"Regarding the risk, we believe that inner-city areas such as Ba Dinh district, Tay Ho district, Hoan Kiem district, and Long Bien district are at risk of flooding along the river. In the next 6 hours, when the water level of the Red River rises, this risk will still exist," said Mr. Hoa.
In addition, the districts of Chuong My, Hoai Duc, My Duc, Dan Phuong, Phuc Tho, Son Tay... also continue to be affected by the increase in water levels in small rivers and intra-provincial rivers, causing localized flooding.
"The risk of prolonged flooding may occur like in Chuong My district. The reason is that the water level of the main river is very high, making it difficult to drain water outside," Mr. Hoa warned.
