After days of relatively pleasant temperatures, it is forecast that the North and Central regions will soon face a prolonged sunny spell. Mr. Nguyen Van Huong - Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has provided opinions on the upcoming weather situation.

Sir, what is the forecast for the upcoming widespread heat wave, what is the maximum temperature in the areas?
- Currently, the North and some central provinces still have rain, accompanied by the risk of flash floods and landslides in the northern mountainous and midland provinces.
Forecast from about the 22nd, these 5 rain spells will gradually decrease and in the Northern region from the 23rd of May, there is a possibility of a widespread heat wave with common temperatures from 36 - 39 degrees C, in some places above 39 degrees C.
The hot sun in the Central region is likely to appear from May 22, with common temperatures from 38 - 40 degrees C, in some places above 40 degrees C. Hot and intense weather, the western mountainous region of the Central region has places with particularly intense hot sun.
We note that the temperature in the meteorological tent measured will differ from the temperature measured on buffer surface conditions such as concrete, asphalt roads. Therefore, the outdoor temperature can be 40 degrees Celsius, or even higher.
What are the causes of this widespread heat wave and which areas are forecast to be the focus of heat in the coming days, sir?
- Regarding the cause of the upcoming hot spell in the North as well as the Central provinces, it is due to the influence of the circulation of the hot low-lying area in the west. The Central region is also affected in combination with the effect of the foehn wind. This is a type of dry, hot wind formed when the humid air mass passes through the mountain range, causing rain on the wind-receiving slope and becoming dry and hot when going down to the wind-hidden slope. In Vietnam, typical is the Lao wind in the Central region.
In the North, the midlands and plains are places with strong heat.
In the Central region, the hot area is the area from Thanh Hoa inwards to Da Nang city, the eastern region of Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Dak Lak provinces. The focus of the intense hot sun and especially intense is the western mountainous area of the provinces from Thanh Hoa to the west of Hue city. The reason is that this area, in addition to the influence of low heat, is also affected by hot and dry foehn winds, causing the heat to increase in intensity.
Sir, how to compare the intensity of this heat wave with the recent one and forecast whether the upcoming heat wave will last?
- The upcoming heat wave in the Northern region and the Central provinces is more intense than the heat wave in the period from May 13 - 16. In the previous heat wave, in the Northern region the common temperature was from 36 - 38 degrees C, Nho Quan (Ninh Binh) had the highest temperature of 38.7 degrees C; the Central region the highest temperature was from 37 - 39 degrees C, Son Hoa (Gia Lai) the highest temperature was 39.7 degrees.
For the Northern provinces, the upcoming heat wave is forecast to last until around May 27; while in the Central region it will last until around May 28.
Thank you very much, sir!
