Climate change is currently one of the biggest challenges to sustainable development in Vietnam. As a country vulnerable to extreme weather events, Vietnam is facing problems such as rising sea levels, droughts, and increasingly severe floods.
In that context, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is one of the key goals in Vietnam's development strategy. In the process of implementing international commitments on climate change, Vietnam has joined the Paris Agreement and committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050. One of the main tools to achieve this goal is to develop a carbon certificate market.
According to statistics from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Vietnam ranks 5th among countries generating carbon credits. Participating in the carbon credit market is both an opportunity and a challenge for Vietnamese enterprises to keep up with the domestic and international markets in terms of green production, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction and sustainable development.
According to Decree 06/2022/ND-CP issued in early 2022, Vietnam has established a roadmap for developing a domestic carbon market. According to the plan, from now until 2027, Vietnam will focus on building a mechanism to operate a carbon credit trading floor and connecting with the international market in 2028. This is an important step in realizing Vietnam's commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the COP26 Conference.
In that context, Lao Dong Newspaper organized a seminar on "Opportunities and challenges in developing the carbon credit market in Vietnam" with the participation of Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Tho - Director of the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment; Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Trong Thinh - Former Head of the Faculty of International Finance - Academy of Finance.
Experts will discuss and clarify the importance of the carbon market; Vietnam's potential and opportunities in operating this market; readiness to operate the market, along with suggestions and comments to ensure effective market operation.
The seminar "Opportunities and challenges in developing the carbon credit market in Vietnam" was held on December 24, 2024 at Lao Dong Newspaper, No. 6 Pham Van Bach, Yen Hoa, Cau Giay, Hanoi.
