The dam containing lead and zinc waste sludge of Bac Kan Non-ferrous Metal Company in Ban Nhuong village, Ban Thi commune broke and spilled into the environment.The dam break area is only a few hundred meters from the residential area and Ban Thi stream.On September 16, at the scene of the dam break, gray, thick waste was seen spilling onto the streets, houses, and covering thousands of square meters of agricultural land.Sludge and murky, gray water continue to flow from the treatment plant area into the environment.Ban Thi stream - a place used by people for farming and raising livestock - has changed color and become murky after the dam broke.People's roads are covered with soil and mineral waste mud.Many areas of cultivated land of Ban Thi commune people were also buried.Crops, plants and animals die and are damaged, withering in the sludge.Ms. Ma Thi Cuc (Ban Thi commune) said that the dam break occurred on the morning of September 9, causing a large amount of sludge to spill onto her family's farmland, damaging nearly 7,000 square meters of land and crops..."The sludge has a strong, metallic smell. I'm worried that these substances will seep into the soil and groundwater, affecting the living environment in the long term. The company has yet to inform the people that it will compensate them," said Ms. Cuc.Speaking with reporters, Mr. Dang Dinh Phong - Vice Chairman of Cho Don District People's Committee confirmed that there was a broken dam of zinc and lead sludge of Bac Kan Non-ferrous Metal Company."The initial estimated volume of waste is about 1,000 tons that spilled out after the dam broke. There are currently no recorded human casualties and the company is counting the area of cultivated land affected by the people. The company is focusing on handling and has completed repairing the broken dam. Regarding the pollution issue, we are currently waiting for the results of sample analysis to conclude" - the district leader informed.
Previously, as Lao Dong reported, people in some communes of Chiem Hoa district (Tuyen Quang) reported that the stream water originating from Cho Don district, Bac Kan province flowing through the commune had a brown color, an unusual smell, and wherever the water flowed, there were mass fish deaths.
About 300/600 households of Binh Phu commune were affected by the dam failure, with 29 tons of caged fish killed, dozens of hectares of cultivated land buried, with preliminary damage estimated at over 3 billion VND.
On September 16, a working group from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment visited the scene of the sludge dam collapse of the Bac Kan Non-ferrous Metal Company to inspect the situation and work with relevant units.
