Lao Cai people clean up after historic storm and flood

Floods on the Red River rose, leaving dozens of households along the riverbank in Lao Cai City submerged. After the water receded, all that remained was mud.

Currently, the flood on the Red River continues to decrease. This morning (September 10), Lao Cai Hydrological Station observed that the water level had decreased to 85.27m (1.77m above alert level III); 1.7m lower than the flood peak.

A layer of mud more than 10 cm thick remained on the road surface after the Red River floodwaters receded.

Due to the large amount of mud, many vehicles had difficulty moving.

On September 10, according to the reporter of Lao Dong Newspaper on An Duong Vuong, Yet Kieu, Ngo Quyen streets... of Lao Cai city, after the water receded, households started to clean up mud and soil, overcoming the damage caused by the flood.

Border guards of Lao Cai province have been present in flooded areas to help people clean up mud and soil that has flooded their homes due to the Red River flood, helping them to soon stabilize their lives.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa (Kim Tan ward, Lao Cai city) said: "Yesterday (September 9), the flood water on the Red River rose high, overflowing onto the streets and into people's houses, causing flooding. Luckily, today the water level has decreased significantly, the rain has stopped, and we told each other to clean up the mud flowing into our houses and streets so we can continue our daily activities."

On the other side of Pho Moi bridge, many households in Van Hoa commune (Lao Cai city) are also using excavators to clean their houses and scoop up mud and dirt along the Red River embankment.

Currently, Lao Cai provincial authorities are mobilizing all resources to search for missing victims of landslides. At the same time, they are focusing on overcoming the consequences of floods.

According to the Standing Vice Chairman of Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee Hoang Quoc Khanh, priority must be given to repairing and ensuring the electricity, communication, transportation and clean water systems for the people. Regarding the work of statistics on damage caused by storms and floods, localities are requested to seriously implement it in the spirit of ensuring completeness and accuracy. Statistics must be made to the extent of the damage to have timely and appropriate support plans.
