HCMC - This morning, the High People's Court in HCMC opened the second phase of the appeal hearing to consider the appeal of Truong My Lan and 27 other defendants.
At more than 8:00 a.m. this morning, defendant Truong My Lan (former Chairman of Van Thinh Phat Group) and 27 accomplices were escorted to the High People's Court in Ho Chi Minh City for the second phase of the appeal trial of the case on the charges of "fraudulent appropriation of property", "money laundering" and "illegally transporting currency across the border".The trial was opened due to the appeals of 28/34 defendants in the Van Thinh Phat case, phase 2, and the appeals of 42 victims and people with related rights and obligations.Those attending the trial must present documents and security checks, send handbags, phones... before entering the trial area. The appeal hearing began at 8:30 a.m. today (March 25), and is scheduled to end on April 21. The presiding judge is Judge Pham Cong Muoi.Defendant Truong My Lan at the trial this morning had 8 lawyers participating in her defense. And about 40 lawyers defended the remaining defendants. At the first instance trial in October 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court sentenced defendant Truong My Lan to life in prison for fraud and appropriation of property, 12 years in prison for money laundering and 8 years in prison for illegal transportation of currency across the border; the total sentence was life in prison. Regarding civil liability, the first instance judgment ordered defendant Truong My Lan to be responsible for compensating more than VND 30,000 billion to more than 35,000 victims. After that, defendant Truong My Lan appealed the entire first instance judgment for the appellate court to comprehensively review her actions.Defendant Truong Hue Van (nehew of defendant Lan, General Director of Van Thinh Phat Group) in court. Previously, at the first instance trial, defendant Truong Hue Van was determined to assist her in issuing bonds and was sentenced to 5 years in prison. This defendant appealed for a reduced sentence.Truong My Lan's accomplices in court. In addition to the appeals of defendants Truong My Lan and Truong Hue Van, there were 26 defendants who appealed for a reduced sentence and a suspended sentence. 7 people with related rights and obligations in the appeal case reviewed the frozen, seized, and blocked assets. According to the first instance judgment in phase 2, Truong My Lan and her accomplices issued 25 "fake" bond packages with a total value of more than VND 30,869 billion, without collateral. Up to now, outstanding loans are still more than VND 30,081 billion, causing great damage to investors.
Defendant Lan was also identified as the person primarily responsible for illegally transporting more than 4.5 billion USD (equivalent to 106,000 billion VND) across the border, using many tricks to legalize illegal cash flow.
