These days, in the coastal area of Vinh Chau town (Soc Trang), it is easy to see people harvesting rice.

People here grow rice but mainly use straw to cover the soil for growing shallots. Therefore, the harvesting process is done entirely by hand. The rice is cut to the roots and then hit against a bin to let the rice grains fall out. The bin is about 2.5m high, surrounded by a net to prevent the rice grains from falling out, and at the bottom is a tool to hold the rice. There is a bamboo ladder to hit the rice grains out of the bundle.

“If using a combine, the straw is crushed or tangled, so when using straw to cover the roots of purple onions, the straw is easily blown away by the wind. But when cutting with a sickle or threshing with a bucket, the straw fibers are kept intact when covering with straw, making it easier to do,” said a rice farmer in Vinh Chau Town (Soc Trang Province).

Mr. Phen in Vinh Chau town has been growing rice and shallots for over 40 years, which is also the time he has been cultivating rice in the traditional way. “We grow rice for family use and straw for shallots. Straw here is as precious as rice grains, every household stores straw to grow other crops. Therefore, although cutting and threshing rice this way takes time and is more difficult, the straw is kept intact,” said Mr. Phen.

The straw was carefully bundled and stacked neatly.

For a long time, Vinh Chau people have considered golden straw to be on par with rice grains, because after the rice crop, the land will be plowed, raised and planted with other crops. Straw is covered around the base of the tree like a rain and sun cover for the shallots.
