Emotional memorial service for those who died in traffic accidents

Waking up very early, Mr. Nguyen Mai (64 years old, residing in Binh Thanh commune, Huong Tra town, Thua Thien Hue) and his wife went to Tu Dam pagoda (Hue city) to perform rituals to pray for his son who died in a traffic accident 13 years ago.

Talking to Mr. Mai, we learned that he was originally from Hue City, later moved to Binh Thanh Commune (Huong Tra Town) and got married, giving birth to four children. Unfortunately, the third child (born in 1990) of the family was hit by a car and died when he was only 21 years old.

“The other day, I learned that Hue would hold a memorial service for someone who died in a traffic accident, so my husband and I went early in the morning to the temple to write down our child’s date of birth and year of death to pray for him. He died on the street, I feel so sorry for him!”, Mr. Mai tearfully recounted.

Representatives from provinces and cities across the country came to Hue to hold a memorial service for victims of traffic accidents.

Just like Mr. Mai's family, many people who came to Tu Dam Pagoda this morning had a sad feeling. Everyone came here to pray for their loved ones after they passed away in a traffic accident.

According to the Organizing Committee, the Grand Requiem for the victims of traffic accidents in 2024 will take place on August 30 and 31 at Tu Dam Pagoda (No. 1 Su Lieu Quan Street, Truong An Ward, Hue City).

On the first day, the Requiem Ceremony will include the following programs: (morning) Ceremony of raising the banner; Welcome the Mountain-Water banner; Ceremony of opening the Buddhist sutras; Inviting the Great Bodhisattva Tieu Dien; Deposition - Inviting the souls to take their seats.

Mr. Le Kim Thanh - Vice Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee said that according to statistics based on reports from the Traffic Safety Committee of 63 provinces and cities nationwide, in July, there were 1,889 traffic accidents nationwide, killing 860 people and injuring 1,424 people. Meanwhile, statistics for the first 7 months of the year showed that there were 14,242 traffic accidents nationwide, killing 6,204 people and injuring 10,976 people.

With the spirit of “Remembering the departed - For the living”, the Great Requiem Ceremony is a meaningful act of humanity, to commemorate those who unfortunately passed away due to traffic accidents. From there, it sends a warning to the whole society about the great losses and damages that each family, community and society must bear due to traffic accidents.
