Binh Quoi - Thanh Da urban area has just been included by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in the list of typical city-level projects competing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025).
This project will be managed by Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Phan Van Mai with the goal of completing the bidding process to select investors by April 30, 2025.
Binh Quoi - Thanh Da Peninsula (Binh Thanh District) is located about 6.5km from the city center. It is surrounded by the Saigon River and Thanh Da Canal, creating a rare natural landscape, favorable for the development of a sustainable ecological urban area. This is the only area in Ho Chi Minh City with a large vacant land fund that can be invested in urban development within a 10km radius of the center.
However, since its approval in 1992, the project has encountered many difficulties due to the huge total investment capital, up to 30,000 billion VND, and the complicated land clearance problem. Many changes of investors have not brought results, causing this area to become a "suspended" project for more than 30 years .
Currently, there are about 5,000 households with more than 16,600 people living in the area, heavily affected by the project delay.
Ho Chi Minh City is organizing an international competition for planning and architectural ideas for the Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula , aiming to turn this place into a modern ecological urban area, playing an important role in the development of the city's green economy, digital economy and circular economy.
One of the important requirements for planning is to ensure the development of public spaces to serve future residents. In addition, the city also encourages proposals for cultural services and nighttime entertainment activities, aiming to create a vibrant urban area that operates 24/7.
At the same time, the planning must reserve at least 200 hectares for green parks, harmoniously connecting with the Saigon River landscape, providing entertainment and sightseeing space for people.
According to architect Ngo Viet Nam Son - specializing in urban planning, Ho Chi Minh City is seriously lacking in green space, with only 0.5 m²/person, while the target is to increase it 20 times. Binh Quoi - Thanh Da peninsula is a low-lying area, retaining many valuable green spaces in the middle of the city.
Therefore, the planning of this area needs to pay special attention to the development of parks and trees associated with the cultural, economic and social activities of the city.
However, the biggest challenge for the project is still the issue of connecting traffic infrastructure. Currently, Binh Quoi - Thanh Da only has Kinh Thanh Da bridge connecting with Binh Quoi - Xo Viet Nghe Tinh road, causing many restrictions on movement.
Mr. Son emphasized that when developing this peninsula, it is necessary to have a comprehensive vision, connecting both the area across the river and the Truong Tho urban area (Thu Duc City). This helps create a complete transportation network, convenient for residents and tourists.
In addition, it is necessary to exploit land funds reasonably to create capital for project development, thereby reducing the financial burden on the city.
