The above two projects have just been included by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee in the list of typical city-level projects competing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025).
The Can Gio International Transit Port Project (Can Gio Port) is targeted by Ho Chi Minh City to start construction on May 30, 2025, if approved by the Government. At that time, this will be the largest port in Vietnam compared to the existing port system.
Recently, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha assigned the Ministry of Planning and Investment to coordinate with relevant ministries, branches, and the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to review the project's consistency and consistency with related planning, and promptly complete all documents to conduct appraisal and request approval of the investment policy.
Can Gio international transit port is being studied for construction on Phu Loi islet, at the mouth of Cai Mep river, with an investment capital of more than 113,000 billion VND (about 4.8 billion USD).
The project scale is estimated at about 571 hectares, the main wharf is more than 7 km long, and can receive the largest container ship today with a capacity of 250,000 DWT (24,000 Teu - 1 Teu is equivalent to 1 20-foot container).
According to the expected progress, Can Gio port will operate from 2027 with the first year's cargo volume of 2.1 million TEU. After 7 investment phases, the volume of cargo through Can Gio port can reach 16.9 million TEU by 2047.
Ho Chi Minh City has ambitions to bring Can Gio port on par with the largest international cargo transit centers in Southeast Asia such as Singapore and Malaysia. The port is expected to contribute VND34,000 - 40,000 billion to the budget each year when operating at full capacity.
Besides developing the port, Ho Chi Minh City also aims to build and develop Can Gio into a regional and international tourist urban area.
Ho Chi Minh City aims to grant a construction permit for the Can Gio coastal urban area project by April 30, 2025 to carry out investment according to regulations.
The project is planned in Long Hoa commune and Can Thanh town with an area of 2,870 hectares. When completed, the project is expected to become a place of residence for more than 228,000 people - 3 times the current population of Can Gio district, attracting nearly 9 million tourists each year and creating more than 36,000 jobs.
The project has undergone two planning adjustments since its initial approval in 2007, with an area of 600 hectares. In 2020, the Government agreed to expand the project nearly five times - 2,870 hectares, with a total investment of VND217,000 billion (over USD9 billion).
After 16 years since it was first approved, this urban area has reclaimed 20 hectares of sea, or about 1% of the planned area, and has not built any structures.
In April 2023, Ho Chi Minh City established a council to appraise the third planning of the urban area. This change reduced the water surface area by more than 300 hectares and the tourism land area by 195 hectares, making room for many construction projects. Of which, the residential land area increased from 100 hectares to 578 hectares.
After the adjusted planning is approved, the investor will implement the project until 2070. The reclaimed area has been assigned to the investor since 2007 and will be implemented until 2057.
