Don't expect

In the rainy afternoon, at a coffee shop with a beautiful owner like Kaity Nguyen, he accidentally heard two old friends over fifty years old talking.

One person sighed: "My child studies well, always tops the class at school, but when he gets home, he doesn't listen, and argues at a moment. The other person smiled sadly: "I'm even worse. I helped him so many times, but when I was in trouble, I didn't see anyone". They sat there, in front of two cups of cool coffee, each telling a different disappointment. But if you listen carefully, it all started from the same reason, they had expected too much from others.

In youth, people often live with hope. That is beautiful. You hope love will be lasting, friends will always be sincere, children will become the version you desire, colleagues will recognize your efforts, life will treat kind people fairly. But in middle age, if you still maintain that expectation, you will be the most tired person.

Because after half a lifetime, what should be understood is that each person has their own journey. No one is born to live according to your wishes. Children are not copies of their parents. Brothers and comrades are not obligated to reciprocate everything you have given. Relatives cannot always understand things you have never said.

The greater the expectation, the deeper the disappointment. It's not because others change, but because you unintentionally put on their shoulders a responsibility that they never promised to shoulder. There is a simple truth, but it takes almost half a lifetime for many people to understand that kindness should come from voluntariness, not from the expectation of being rewarded. When helping someone just because you want them to help you later, it is already an exchange disguised as affection. And every exchange is at risk of losing money.

Learning to let go of expectations is not living in indifference or losing faith in humanity. On the contrary, it is a step of maturity for the mind to find peace again. When you give help, love or kindness without demanding any conditions or repayment, your heart will naturally become light and free.

Giving up hopes for others is the time for you to return to love and take responsibility for your own life. In middle age, the greatest freedom does not come from owning so many relationships or receiving so much gratitude, but from the ability to smile and accept everything as it is. Reducing expectations for the world around you is the most tolerant gift you can give yourself after the ups and downs of human life.
