When doctors turn patient anxiety into a tool to make money

Lê Thanh Phong |

During the procedure, the medical team made the patient painful and mentally confused, and had to spend more money to make a "higher-end procedure" package.

The case occurred at Phuong Do General Clinic in Hai Phong, the investigating agency has prosecuted 19 defendants for the crimes of Extortion and Tax evasion.

What is worrying is that "threatening illness", "drawing disease" is not a story only found in one clinic.

In some localities, people have reflected on the situation of advertising low examination prices to attract customers, then arising many tests, X-rays, IV fluids, procedures or medicines with increased costs.

In some places, patients are consulted in a way that makes them worried, scared, and then forced to decide immediately, without enough time to learn about or consult other opinions.

A healthy person is diagnosed by a doctor with a disease, mild illness is pushed into danger, services that are not necessarily necessary are presented as a mandatory choice. That behavior is no longer medical consultation, but shows signs of fraud and extortion.

No one is allowed to use ignorance, psychological panic or the patient's painful condition to urge them to spend money.

However, violations cannot be equated with the entire private healthcare system. Many doctors and medical staff are wholeheartedly treating patients, and many clinics are contributing to reducing the burden on public hospitals.

Therefore, it is necessary to strictly handle profit-seeking establishments to protect patients and the reputation of the medical industry.

From cases of clinics drawing diseases, causing pain to patients to sell packages at high prices, the responsibility first of all belongs to management agencies. It is not possible to just wait until someone denounces, there is a case or there are victims speaking out to inspect.

Licensing activities, practicing conditions, professional personnel, advertising, price lists, technical designations and fee collection must be substantively supervised.

Signs such as hiring certificates, hiring doctors to be named, false advertising, and urging patients to use services outside of their needs need need to be checked early.

If an establishment shows signs of prolonged violations without being detected, it is necessary to clarify management responsibilities. A practicing license is a condition for operation, not a shield to shield acts of profiteering.

Strictly handling the case in Hai Phong is also a warning to all medical facilities, not to turn medical examination and treatment activities into tools for extortion.

Don't let patients enter the clinic with health worries, then come out with a debt and a greater fear.

Doctors are not allowed to turn patients' worries and fears into tools to make money, and medical facilities are not allowed to turn patients into "gold mines".
