On August 25, 2024, Lao Dong Newspaper published an article "Garbage in Can Tho: From frustration to helplessness", reflecting on the situation of waste pollution, many people feel helpless and are forced to live with garbage...
People are clearly upset, but who is helpless?
For example, on July 24, the People's Committee of Can Tho City issued a document to resolve the Lao Dong Newspaper's reflection on the waste situation on Vo Van Kiet Street. The Chairman of the People's Committee of Can Tho City assigned the Chairman of Ninh Kieu District and the Chairman of Binh Thuy District to urgently organize the remediation..., and at the same time report the results to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and the People's Committee of the City before July 31.
However, in August, garbage was still dumped in this area. Lao Dong reporters went to the field and had a photo report "After the direction of the Chairman of Can Tho, garbage is still scattered". Not only are the old landfills not treated, but other landfills have also appeared on the connecting road.
May I ask, how did the Chairman of Ninh Kieu District People's Committee and the Chairman of Binh Thuy District People's Committee respond to the Chairman of Can Tho City?
Let me remind you of an unpleasant story about garbage in Can Tho. Last July, a group of European tourists visited Cai Rang floating market and found it too polluted and trashy, so they refused to accept it and asked the travel company to move them to another province.
When asked, government representatives said that garbage flooded canals and rivers because of traders dumping it.
The streets were full of garbage. When asked, the representative of the garbage treatment unit replied that it was due to the difficulty of lacking garbage collection points. Currently, there are only temporary garbage collection points, and there are many places in the area where garbage is illegally dumped.
The answers are all correct, that is people dump garbage illegally, littering the environment. Without people dumping garbage indiscriminately, there would not be piles of garbage everywhere in Can Tho city.
But one thing that needs to be affirmed is that we cannot just blame the people but must review the management capacity of the government. Let's look at neighboring countries to see what they do so that people do not dare to litter, to keep their country green, clean, and beautiful. Singapore is an example.
Closer to home, Can Tho needs to refer to domestic localities, namely Vung Tau, Quy Nhon, Hue, which are three cities honored as "ASEAN Clean Tourist Cities".
