1. Diaphragmatic breathing
Diaphragmatic breathing is also known as belly breathing. It is a technique that uses the diaphragm, a large muscle located below the lungs, to inhale and exhale. This type of breathing is often used to reduce stress, increase lung capacity, and improve overall health.
How to do:
- Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Place one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach.
- Breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose. As you inhale, focus on the feeling of your belly expanding, not your chest.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth, while pushing your belly in.
- Try counting to four as you inhale and four as you exhale. As you feel more comfortable, you can gradually increase the count.
- Repeat this process for a few minutes.
2. Breathe rhythmically
Rhythmic breathing is simply breathing in a steady, regular pattern. Keep your breathing rhythmic as you run or jump. This is beneficial for endurance runners because it can help them maintain a steady pace and avoid getting tired too quickly.
How to do:
- Start running at a pace that feels comfortable.
- When running, count your steps and adjust your breathing to the rhythm you have chosen.
- If you start to feel short of breath, slow down or adjust your breathing.
3. Breathe through your mouth and nose
Using your mouth to breathe can be especially helpful during intense exercise, as it allows for better airflow.
However, relying solely on mouth breathing can lead to dryness and irritation. By combining both mouth and nose breathing, you can balance your airflow, optimize your oxygen intake, and avoid discomfort.
4. Box breathing
Box breathing is a technique that involves inhaling, holding your breath, then exhaling and pausing for a second before inhaling again. This technique is often used to reduce stress, anxiety, and improve concentration.
How to do:
- To practice box breathing, first find a comfortable position.
- Breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose.
- Hold your breath for 4 counts.
- Exhale slowly through your mouth for 4 counts and repeat the cycle.
