A 21-year-old girl, a Nung ethnic person in Lang Son, had undergone 8 surgeries due to congenital colon complications before.
When a large ovarian tumor appeared quickly, the patient continued to face the risk of having the appendix removed, directly affecting fertility. However, in the 9th surgery, doctors at the Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital made efforts to intervene, remove the entire tumor and preserve the ovaries for the patient.
Patient T.N. H, 21 years old, was admitted to the hospital in a particularly complicated condition. Previously, the patient had undergone abdominal surgery many times, so the abdominal area had many adhesive scars, and the intestinal ducts were tightly attached to each other, making surgical intervention very difficult.
Dr. Nguyen Van Thang, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Oncology, Central Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, said that the patient's ovarian tumor developed silently and had grown larger than 20cm. Initially, H only thought her body was gaining normal weight. Only when abnormal signs appeared such as shortness of breath, ureteral compression, pyelonephlar distension, affecting the liver and lungs, did the patient go for examination and the disease was discovered.
What worries the female patient the most is the risk of having to remove all the appendages to ensure safety. For a very young person, it means that the future of motherhood may be seriously affected.
Dr. Nguyen Van Thang added that this is a rare case and has a very high level of difficulty. After receiving the patient, the hospital organized a thorough consultation to develop the most appropriate treatment plan.
According to Dr. Thang, the biggest challenge is not only to remove the tumor but also to avoid damaging the intestines and other organs due to adhesions after many previous surgeries. Therefore, the team decided to perform an endoscopic exploration first at the special puncture site to accurately assess the condition inside the abdominal cavity, and then choose a safe surgical route.
From the exploration results, doctors coordinated between endoscopy and open surgery to remove the tumor. The goal was not only to thoroughly treat the lesions but also to try to preserve the ovaries for the patient.
After many hours of surgery, the large tumor was completely removed. More importantly, the female patient's ovaries were successfully preserved, helping to retain fertility opportunities in the future.
