On March 18, Vung Tau General Hospital (Phuoc Thang ward, Ho Chi Minh City) said that it had coordinated with Gia Dinh People's Hospital to successfully operate and save a patient with severe traumatic brain injury due to a traffic accident.
Previously, on the evening of March 14, patient V.Q. C (born in 1996, residing in Vung Tau ward) was admitted to the hospital for treatment in critical condition due to a traffic accident. At this time, patient C was in a deep coma with a Glasgow (GCS) score of only 5 points, showing that the level of traumatic brain injury was very severe, with a high risk of death. CT scan results of the skull recorded blood clots outside the epidural in the forehead area, accompanied by skull fracture in the forehead - apex - left temple and swelling of soft tissue in the forehead area.
Faced with the patient's critical condition, doctors quickly consulted with Gia Dinh People's Hospital and decided to perform emergency surgery to release the blood clot, reduce intracranial pressure, in order to protect the patient's life.
The surgery was performed at about 0:15 on March 15, directly performed by BS.CK1 Nguyen Thanh Dong - Department of Neurosurgery, Gia Dinh People's Hospital; BS.CK1 Ha Ngoc Phuc - Department of General Surgery, Vung Tau General Hospital, with the support of the anesthesia and resuscitation team of 2 hospitals.
According to BS.CK1 Nguyen Thanh Dong, if the hematoma is not treated promptly, it can cause brain compression, leading to the risk of death or leaving serious sequelae. Urgent surgery to remove the hematoma and release brain compression is the decisive factor in regaining the patient's chance of survival.
With the smooth coordination between the 2 hospitals and specialties, the surgery lasting more than 3 hours took place smoothly and safely. Currently, the patient has passed the most dangerous stage and is being closely monitored, cared for and actively treated post-operatively.
