Dermatologist guides how to read the cosmetic ingredient list before buying

Many people choose cosmetics based on advertising or advertisements on social networks.

However, according to MSc. Dr. Dang Thi Hong Phuong, Deputy Head of the General Planning Department, Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital, reading the ingredient list is a simple way to help consumers choose suitable products and limit the risk of skin irritation.

According to Dr. Phuong, when viewing the ingredient list, consumers should pay attention first to the first 5-6 ingredients because these are the substances that account for the highest proportion in the product. From there, it is possible to recognize that the product focuses on moisturizing, restoring, or treating skin problems.

Some common moisturizing ingredients include glycerin, hyaluronic acid and panthenol. If skin recovery is needed, users can find ingredients such as niacinamide, ceramide or pennywort extract. Meanwhile, active ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C, AHA, BHA are often used to help improve acne, dark spots and skin aging.

Besides beneficial ingredients, consumers also need to pay attention to substances that can cause irritation to sensitive skin. These include flavorings, dry alcohol, strong foaming agents or some preservatives. People with a history of allergies should carefully check the ingredient list before use.

According to experts, there is no product that is suitable for everyone. Oily skin should prioritize thin and light products, limiting clogging of pores. Dry skin needs good moisturizing ingredients, while sensitive skin should choose products with simple ingredients, without fragrances and dry alcohol.

Dr. Phuong also recommends not to choose cosmetics based only on advertising or reviews on social networks. The effectiveness of the product depends on each person's skin condition and many promotional contents may be commercial and do not fully reflect the risk of irritation.

Before using a new product, users should try it on a small area of skin in the inside of the arm for 48 - 72 hours. If no signs such as redness, itching, burning, or swelling appear, they can consider using it. For people with sensitive skin or experiencing skin problems, consulting a dermatologist will help choose a safer and more suitable product.
