On November 29, Hue Central Hospital announced that after the heart transplant, patient H.T.P. (23 years old) can now eat, move in bed, and all tests are within normal limits.
Previously, on the morning of November 27, as soon as receiving information from the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center that there was a brain-dead donor at Military Hospital 103, Hue Central Hospital sent a team of doctors to depart for Hanoi.
On the afternoon of November 27, after the third diagnosis of brain death, with the consent of the patient's family and coordination of the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, Military Hospital 103 and teams from Military Central Hospital 108, Hue Central Hospital coordinated to retrieve donated organs including the heart, lungs, liver and 2 kidneys.
The heart was coordinated for transplant to patient P. who is being treated at Hue Central Hospital. Mr. P. has dilated cardiomyopathy, end-stage heart failure with very low heart function EF 12%, waiting for transplant since 2018. The patient was hospitalized many times in emergency condition, very severe heart failure requiring a ventilator and using many cardiac medications.
Thanks to careful, thorough preparation and active support throughout the process, the heart was transported to the Cardiovascular Center (Hue Central Hospital) in time during the "golden hour".
After 4 hours and 5 minutes from the time of receiving and transporting to Hue Central Hospital, the heart beat healthily again in the patient's chest at 10:20 p.m. on November 27.
5 hours after surgery, the patient was extubated, heart function 62%.
"We changed the technique by performing a priority anastomosis to let the heart beat again early, then completing the remaining anastomosis when the heart is beating to minimize the time of heart ischemia and is very meaningful in restoring heart function after surgery," said Dr. Dang The Uyen - Deputy Director of the Cardiovascular Center, Head of the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation.
Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep - Director of Hue Central Hospital said that doctors raced against time, overcoming space obstacles, to safely bring the heart back for transplant to the patient with the requirement that no mistakes or delays were allowed because the donated heart was a priceless gift and the critically ill patient was waiting for the transplant every second and minute.
"Hue Central Hospital respectfully presents its gratitude to the donor and the noble gesture of the donor's family. It sincerely thanks the coordination and active support of the units so that the hospital can devote all its efforts to contributing to the successful organ transplant to save the patient's life," said Prof. Dr. Pham Nhu Hiep.
According to Hue Central Hospital, this is the 14th heart transplant at the hospital and the 13th cross-Vietnam heart transplant. In less than a month, the hospital performed 2 cross-Vietnam heart transplants and 4 corneal transplants from brain-dead donor tissues and organs.
After 130 years of construction and development, the hospital has a scale of more than 5,000 beds, modern equipment, and a team of well-trained and professional medical staff. According to the roadmap to build a high-end medical center of Thua Thien Hue, organ transplantation has become routine and an indispensable leading field.
