On January 14, Quang Binh Friendship Hospital (Quang Tri province) said that it had just received and treated a patient with necrosis of the back area due to applying the leaf application method to treat boils according to oral experience.
The patient is Ms. N.T.M (69 years old, residing in Phong Nha commune, Quang Tri province), admitted to the hospital in a state of high fever, fatigue, severe back pain. The results of paraclinical tests showed that the patient showed signs of severe infection.
Doctor Vo Nhat Nam, Department of Surgery - Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, said that the necrotic area is about 4x4cm in size, the red inflammatory area around is nearly 10x10cm wide, posing a risk of widespread infection, leading to blood infections and seriously affecting the liver, kidneys, and brain.
According to medical history investigation, before being hospitalized, Ms. M had boils on her back, had been examined at the health station and was given antibiotics. However, after 2 days of use, the patient voluntarily stopped taking the medicine and switched to applying leaves according to folk experience.
The ingredients used by Ms. M included dam but leaves, song doi leaves, xau ho leaves, mui leaves, wind leaf (local name), garlic and salt seeds, crushed and applied directly to the injured area. After only 2 days, the swollen back area spread, the skin ulcerated, oozed a lot of fluid and was severely painful, forcing the family to take the patient to the emergency room.
At the hospital, the patient was treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics combined with purulent removal surgery and incision. After a period of intensive monitoring and care, the patient's health condition has stabilized, and the wound shows signs of recovery.
Doctor Vo Nhat Nam recommends that people should not use oral remedies that have not been scientifically proven.
Using drugs or inappropriate methods can make the disease worse, threatening health and life. When there are abnormal signs, patients need to go to a medical facility for examination and timely treatment.
