Khanh Hoa General Hospital has recently issued a warning of increased risk of death if swimming in the sea or lake after consuming alcohol.
Recently, this unit recorded four tourists being taken to the hospital in very serious condition for emergency treatment, although doctors and nurses tried to treat them but they all did not survive.
Test results showed that all four tourists had blood alcohol levels - proving that they had consumed alcohol or alcoholic substances before going into the water.
Doctors say that the main cause of death is not drowning or waterlogging while bathing, but due to sudden situations such as heart attack, stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, which often occur while going into the water, especially after drinking alcohol.
Alcohol impairs the ability to judge, reflect and control movement. When in the water, drinkers can easily misestimate the depth, flow or cramps, respiratory disorders, and even lose consciousness, leading to drowning or death.
In addition, swimming in the sea or lake during hot weather (11am - 2pm) increases the risk of heat stroke, heatstroke, and fainting, especially for people who have used alcohol. When combining both factors - alcohol and extreme weather - the risk of stroke is even higher.
Khanh Hoa General Hospital recommends that people and tourists: Absolutely do not go into the water after using alcohol or alcoholic substances; Avoid swimming in the sea or lake during hot weather (from 11am to 2pm); only bathe in areas with safety signs or rescue forces on duty; warm up carefully every 5 - 10 minutes before going into the water to avoid cramps, heatstroke...
These warnings become even more urgent in the context of the peak sea tourism season in Khanh Hoa and many Central provinces.
People need to raise awareness of prevention to avoid similar tragic incidents.
