On March 17, information from Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital said that the unit had just successfully resuscitated and operated on a case of ovarian cyst with necrotizing torsion complications on a 28-week-old fetus. This is a complex obstetric emergency situation, with many potential risks for both mother and fetus.
Previously, pregnant woman N.T. T. C (29 years old), residing in Khe Sanh commune, Quang Tri province, pregnant for the second time at week 28 of pregnancy, was hospitalized in a state of severe abdominal pain in the right hypochondrium, accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
Through clinical examination combined with ultrasound, doctors discovered a right ovarian cyst about 7-10 cm in size, with twisted complications.
According to doctors of the Obstetrics Department, this is a dangerous emergency situation because ovarian cyst torsion can cause anemia, leading to ovarian necrosis and threatening the lives of the mother and fetus if not intervened in time. Immediately after that, the hospital ordered emergency surgery to diagnose and treat the cause.
Due to the large size of the 28 weeks pregnant uterus and limited surgical space, the team could not perform laparoscopic surgery.
During the surgery, the team recorded that the tumor and right fallopian tube had twisted 3 times, the entire appendix was purple-black due to necrosis. Doctors proceeded to clip and remove the entire right appendix to remove the necrotic tissue, prevent the risk of toxicity spreading into the mother's circulatory system, and at the same time control bleeding and preserve the remaining reproductive structures to the maximum.
The surgery went smoothly. After surgery, the pregnant woman's health stabilized, and the fetus in the mother's womb continued to develop normally.
After 7 days of monitoring and intensive care at the hospital, the pregnant woman recovered well. The pregnant woman was ordered to be discharged from the hospital in the joy of her family and the team of doctors.
According to Quang Tri Provincial General Hospital, ovarian cysts during pregnancy are mostly benign. However, some cases can cause dangerous complications such as twisting, rupturing or compression, especially when the tumor is large. Doctors recommend pregnant women to have regular prenatal check-ups and full ultrasounds according to the schedule to detect early abnormalities in the ovaries or appendages. When symptoms such as sudden abdominal pain, prolonged severe pain, nausea, vomiting or abdominal tension appear, it is necessary to go to a medical facility for timely examination.
