On March 5, Ba Ria General Hospital (Tam Long ward, Ho Chi Minh City) said that it had received and successfully intervened with emergency surgery, preserving the testicles for a 13-year-old patient with testicular torsion despite being admitted to the hospital for treatment quite late.
Previously, this patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of sudden and severe pain in the left scrotum, although not injured, the pain had started about 5 hours ago.
Determining it to be an emergency surgical emergency case, on-duty doctors quickly examined and indicated a Doppler testicular ultrasound right at the bed. The ultrasound results determined that the patient had spermatorrhea causing ischemia to nourish the testicles. This is a case with a "golden time" of treatment in just 6 hours after onset, after this time, the rate of bleeding and necrosis requiring testicle removal is up to over 90%.
Therefore, doctors and nurses of the departments of Ba Ria General Hospital have accelerated the procedures, quickly performed surgery, and successfully removed testicular torsion, helping blood vessels to circulate again, testicles to be rosy and preserved intact, ensuring physiological health for the patient later.
According to Ba Ria General Hospital, this is a condition of spontaneous rotation of the testicles around the semen cord axis, causing sudden blockage of the blood supply. The disease is common in male children and adolescents, especially in puberty (can occur even while sleeping). Many unfortunate cases require testicle removal because patients are shy about hiding the disease, or parents subjectively assume that the child only has common abdominal and inguinal pain.
Therefore, Ba Ria General Hospital recommends that parents take their children for emergency examination immediately if they detect signs: sharp, sudden, severe pain in the scrotum/testolium area; swelling, bulging, redness or dark purple in the scrotum area; testicles with pain contracting higher than normal; the pain may spread to the groin, lower abdomen, sometimes accompanied by nausea.
When the above symptoms occur, absolutely do not let children suffer at home; do not arbitrarily apply hot/cold compresses or use pain relievers without a doctor's prescription. Delaying medical examination can lead to unfortunate consequences that cannot be overcome.
