Medical nail care: Safety solutions for healthy feet
Unlike the nail care service at the spa, medical nail care (medi-pedi) is performed in a sterile environment by a foot specialist or a trained medical professional. The biggest difference of medi-pedi is focusing on prevention and treatment, instead of focusing only on aesthetics.
According to Dr. Sarah Richards, a foot specialist in the United States: Healthy nail care is an important boundary between maintaining healthy legs and the risk of complications, especially for diabetics or cancer patients.
Process and benefits
A medi-pedi session usually starts with a general foot check, reverse nail regrowth, removal of bottle stains with specialized tools, skin care and moisturizing. All are done safely, minimizing the risk of infection.
medi-pedi costs range from 50 - 100 USD depending on the location, in big cities it can be over 200 USD. Although not popular in Vietnam, this trend is spreading as many people pay more attention to foot health.
The most important benefit of medi-pedi is early detection and prevention of leg problems. For diabetics, just a small scratch can lead to ulcers and necrosis. People with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus or psoriasis are also susceptible to complications if they only do nails at the spa. The patient is being treated for cancer, due to a weakened immune system, and needs medi-pedi even more to prevent infection.
Who should choose medi-pedi?
Not only for patients, medi-pedi is also useful for the elderly, athletes or anyone who has difficulty taking care of their nails. If you find unusual nails, pain in your feet when wearing shoes or signs of fungus, see a specialist instead of treating them at a spa, says Dr Richards.
Medi-pedi does not provide the same relaxation as a spa session, but in return, it protects your foot health, prevents complications, and helps you maintain healthy legs for a long time.
