Metabolic syndrome is a group of metabolic disorders with symptoms including abdominal obesity, high blood fat, high blood pressure and insulin resistance.

Eating a high-fiber diet is beneficial for controlling blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels, says nutritionist Jenna Braddock. Incorporating more fiber-rich foods into your diet can potentially improve all aspects of metabolic syndrome.

“What’s more, fiber plays a role in weight control. Fiber-rich meals reduce ghrelin, the hunger hormone, and increase feelings of fullness,” says nutritionist Dr. Renee Korczak of Olipop.

Fiber also helps control cholesterol levels, improves blood vessel elasticity, and helps maintain healthy blood pressure, says Dr. Kunal Lal, an internist based in Miami.

Therefore, fiber is the number 1 nutrient for improving metabolic syndrome, as it helps control blood sugar, blood pressure, triglycerides and weight.
