7 years of growing up with tumors
The 20-year-old girl is from Ha Tinh, currently living and working in the Czech Republic. From the early years of puberty, she noticed abnormal lumps appearing on both breasts.
At the age of 13, when her body began to have changes of puberty, she thought that the tumors might just be part of the normal development process, so she had not gone for an examination. However, over time, the tumors continued to grow. Especially in recent years, both breasts have developed excessively, clearly affecting her physique and daily life.
The weight of both breasts makes her body tend to fall forward, her back gradually becomes hunched, and her neck and shoulders are often painful and tired. Exercising, choosing clothes, as well as many daily activities become difficult.
Throughout the years that should have been the most beautiful time of her teenage years, she had to find ways to adapt to a different body and gradually lost confidence.
On the occasion of her return to Vietnam, she decided to go to Bach Mai Hospital for examination.
Through examination and in-depth evaluation, doctors determined that the patient had multiple giant fibroids on both breasts, accompanied by mammary gland hypertrophy.
For a 20-year-old patient, doctors not only have to deal with tumors that have developed for many years, but also have to calculate treatment options to minimize the impact on the breast and body shape in the long term.
Take the tumor, keep the mammary gland at maximum
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thi Viet Dung, Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Aesthetics, Bach Mai Hospital, said that for young patients, especially those with lesions appearing from puberty, surgery is not only aimed at removing tumors but also to maximally preserve breast parenchyma, nipple-breast complex, breast function, breastfeeding ability later and ensure a balanced physique.
After careful evaluation, the team removed fibrous tumors, combined shaping and preserving important structures. The tumor on the left is nearly 3kg, on the right is more than 2kg, total weight is about 5kg.
According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thi Viet Dung, breast fibroids in young people are mostly benign and have a good prognosis if detected, diagnosed, and treated appropriately. However, some tumors can grow rapidly, causing skin stretching, sagging, breast deformity, affecting posture, movement, and psychology.
Rapid tumor growth in adolescence is not synonymous with cancer, but should not be subjective. Patients need to be examined by a specialist to determine the nature of the injury and rule out diseases with similar manifestations, including leptoma.
Early detection helps to diagnose correctly, choose appropriate treatment options, maximize the preservation of healthy mammary gland tissue and limit later deformities," Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thi Viet Dung recommended.
