End of year partying, be careful with parasitic diseases

Lệ Hà |

At the end of the year, when parties increase, the risk of many potential diseases, including parasitic diseases from unsanitary food and raw food, also increases.

Too many parties, liver, digestion... "cry for help"

Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen - Director of the Poison Control Center (Bach Mai Hospital) - said that at the end of the year, there are endless year-end parties, the habit of eating more fried and stir-fried foods, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, etc., causing many people to lose control of their nutrition, causing health consequences that require hospitalization.

Every year-end, the center continuously receives and treats many cases of poisoning due to drinking alcohol without labels, without origin, without ingredients, and floating on the market. These types of alcohol are mixed with industrial alcohol by the manufacturer to make a profit.

The Poison Control Center has discovered that many alcohol disinfectant products have very high methanol concentrations, accounting for 70-90%. Many people have bought this alcohol to mix into wine for sale.

Many patients are poisoned and hospitalized due to alcohol poisoning, most of them are men and can occur at any age. Most of these cases are due to drinking too much alcohol, the alcohol concentration in the blood is very high, up to hundreds of mg/dL.

Disease from favorite food

Associate Professor, Dr. Do Trung Dung - Head of the Department of Parasitology (Central Institute of Malaria - Parasitology - Entomology) - also said that at the end of the year, many people choose to eat hot pot dishes for parties and gatherings.

However, when eating aquatic vegetables (water spinach, Vietnamese coriander, celery, fish mint, etc.), they should only be dipped in hot pot water and not cooked, which will not kill the larvae. People who eat them will not only be infected with worm eggs but also have the possibility of being infected with large liver fluke larvae.

“Eating vegetables that are not washed or cooked thoroughly will ensure that there is a risk of infection with large liver flukes and roundworm and hookworm eggs. Large liver flukes can cause abscesses in the liver and the larvae can travel throughout the human body, causing damage and extrahepatic abscesses in the armpits, abdominal muscles, knees, thighs, calves, etc. To prevent liver flukes, people should give up the habit of eating raw or undercooked food...” - Associate Professor, Dr. Do Trung Dung recommends.

Seafood salad, rare meat, pickled fish and meat, animal organs, raw vegetables, vegetable juices… have the risk of being infected with parasitic worms, which is harmful to health. These are also favorite dishes of many people.

Parasitic worm larvae can be transmitted to humans through food when consuming raw or unsanitary food containing eggs or cysts carrying larvae. Some other types can enter the human body through skin contact.

"When infected with worms, patients often have symptoms of abdominal pain, digestive disorders, weight loss, fatigue, and itchy skin. The disease progresses silently. Many cases are accidentally discovered when going for a health check-up with tests and imaging.

If not detected and treated promptly, parasitic worm infection can cause many dangerous complications such as intestinal or bile duct obstruction, gastrointestinal bleeding, anemia, cholangitis, hemoptysis, liver abscess, encephalitis, meningitis... After recovery, the patient can still be re-infected if they do not eat hygienically and deworm regularly" - Associate Professor, Dr. Do Trung Dung said.
