Prostate hypertrophy is a common cause
According to Dr. Sanman Gowda - Head of Department cum Urology Consultant at KMC Hospital, India, if the number of urinations increases significantly, especially if you have to wake up many times at night, patients should pay attention.
Dr. Gowda said that prostate enlargement often appears after age 50 and is one of the most common causes of frequent urination in older men. When the prostate gland increases in size, the flow of urine from the bladder is obstructed, causing urine not to be completely eliminated. Stagnant urine creates a feeling of continuous urge to urinate even after going to the toilet.
In addition to frequent urination, patients may also experience symptoms such as weak urine flow, intermittent urination, having to strain when urinating, or the feeling that the bladder is not completely empty.
Professor Gerald L. Andriole - Urology expert at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (USA) - said that prostate hypertrophy is a very common disease in elderly men. Early assessment of urinary tract symptoms helps reduce the risk of complications and improve quality of life.
Not all cases of frequent urination are caused by the prostate gland
Experts emphasize that frequent urination does not always stem from prostate enlargement. This condition may also be related to urinary tract infections, hyperactive bladder, bladder stones, Parkinson's disease, stroke history, or side effects of certain medications.
If left untreated, prostate enlargement can cause urinary tract infections, bladder stones, kidney damage, and even kidney failure. Some cases also show blood in the urine or symptoms similar to prostate cancer.
Dr. Gowda said that most patients can be effectively controlled with oral medication. Only a small percentage require laparoscopic surgery or laser treatment. Therefore, men over 50 years old with prolonged urinary symptoms should proactively seek urology to be diagnosed and treated promptly.
