Having digestive problems
Celery is rich in mannitol - a substance that causes digestive side effects.
Many people even have diarrhea after drinking celery juice. Although this side effect of celery juice will gradually decrease over time, no one is sure when it will end.
High blood pressure
The amount of sodium found in celery juice is relatively high. There is about 189mg of sodium in a cup of 240 ml celery juice. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, each adult should consume only 2300 mg of sodium per day. Therefore, drinking a few glasses of celery juice can cause sodium levels to exceed the allowable level.
High sodium intake is one of the contributing causes of high blood pressure, especially in people who are sensitive to the ingredients of salt.
Therefore, people with high blood pressure should limit their intake of celery juice and other sodium-rich foods.
Sensitivity to sunlight
Celery is rich in psoralen - a compound that reacts to sunlight and can cause inflammation that leads to blisters and make the skin more susceptible to sunburn when exposed to sunlight.
However, this reaction only occurs when consuming a large amount of celery juice per day.
