Ho Chi Minh City - After 21 days of treatment, a premature baby girl weighing only 1.2 kg, unable to breathe on her own, has now gained weight and is eligible to return to her parents' arms.

On August 12, Vung Tau General Hospital (Phuoc Thang ward, Ho Chi Minh City) said that after 21 days of continuous monitoring and treatment, a premature baby girl has been able to breathe and breastfeed on her own, and is eligible for discharge and return to her family.

Previously, from the 28th week of pregnancy, pregnant woman D. N. B. H (residing in Vung Tau ward, Ho Chi Minh City) was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, fetal growth slow. On July 19, this pregnant woman suddenly had massive bleeding and was taken to Vung Tau General Hospital. After examination, doctors of the Obstetrics Department diagnosed placental abruption, ordered emergency surgery; and a baby girl was born when the fetus was only 31 weeks old, weighing 1,200 grams.

After birth, the baby girl fell into a state of whole-body cyanosis, respiratory failure, no breathing, and low SpO2 index. Faced with the baby's critical condition, the pediatric department of the hospital quickly proceeded with emergency treatment: balloon ventilation through a mask, endotracheal intubation, and surfactant injection to support the nascent lung function of premature babies.

After emergency treatment, the baby girl gradually turned rosy again, was placed in an incubator and received special care; respiratory support with ventilation. Then continued to change appropriate treatment measures.

For 21 consecutive days with the care of every bit of milk, every breath of the medical team, from a small body dependent on a ventilator to maintain breathing, the baby gradually stabilized, breathed on his own, fed on his own and gained weight. On the day of discharge, the baby's weight reached 1,570g and was eligible to return to his family.

Doctor Le Van Luc - Department of Pediatrics, Vung Tau General Hospital, said that this is the first time the Department of Pediatrics has performed the process of caring for and nurturing a premature baby with low weight at such a level and still suffering from respiratory failure.

This requires continuous and very careful monitoring, from breathing, body temperature, nutrition to the risk of infection. Therefore, taking care of the baby every day is a challenge, requiring the entire team to closely coordinate, closely monitor every small development and adjust appropriate care methods.
