On May 16, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital said that doctors at the Neonatal Unit had just successfully saved a premature baby boy at 31 weeks and 4 days of gestation, weighing 1.5kg, suffering from severe respiratory failure due to critical respiratory syndrome in premature babies.
The child was indicated for emergency surgery because the mother had severe hemorrhagic placenta previa. After birth, the baby did not cry, had slow heartbeat, cyanosis, and respiratory failure, so he was actively resuscitated right in the operating room and transferred to the Neonatal Unit for intensive care.
Here, children are supported with early CPAP breathing, intravenous feeding, prevention of apnea in premature babies and close monitoring of respiratory conditions. X-ray results determined that the child had critical respiratory syndrome (RDS), also known as severe pleural disease.
Under the professional guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Binh - Head of Pediatrics Department, the team injected surfactants using INSURE technology according to the professional guidance of the Ministry of Health and the European consensus 2025.
After intervention, the child's condition gradually improved, reducing oxygen demand, exclusive breastfeeding from the 10th day. During treatment, the child was strictly controlled for infection, yellow skin monitored, brain hemorrhage and retinal disease screening for premature babies.
After more than 20 days of treatment, the child's health stabilized and he was discharged from the hospital.
