Pregnant woman P.T.Q (29 years old) had undergone cervical cerclage at 18 weeks of pregnancy at another medical facility in Da Nang. At 23 weeks, the pregnant woman went to several places for examination and discovered that her cervix was shortening and was advised by the doctor to rest as much as possible with medication, without any further treatment.
When there were signs of abnormality in the fetus's health, the pregnant woman went to Hospital 199 for a pregnancy check-up at 24 weeks. Here, the doctors performed an ultrasound and discovered that the length of the pregnant woman's cervix was only 6mm and the opening in the cervix was U-shaped, the amniotic sac was in the cervical canal. Notably, the pregnant woman's cervix was 80% obliterated, dilated 2cm and the amniotic membrane was protruding from the opening outside the cervix.
Dr. Truong Quoc Viet, Obstetrics and Pediatrics Unit, Hospital 199, said: "This is a case where the cervix has been almost completely effaced, with a high risk of miscarriage if not intervened promptly. Therefore, the team decided to urgently advise hot cerclage for this pregnant woman."
The doctors performed the procedure, pumping air to push the amniotic sac up, then performed cervical cerclage (on the old cervical cerclage site). The length of the cervix after re-evaluation on ultrasound was 32mm, the amniotic membrane was intact and the fetal heart was functioning well.
The successful surgery lasted about 45 minutes, performed by a team of doctors: Dr. CKII Truong Quoc Viet - obstetrician and gynecologist with more than 12 years of experience at the Central Maternity Hospital, along with Dr. Doan Thi Thanh Hoa and colleagues.
After surgery, the mother had no discharge or vaginal bleeding, and the health indicators of both mother and fetus were still developing well. The mother is being cared for and monitored at the Obstetrics and Pediatrics Unit.
