Dr. Bhavya Reddy, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru (India), dry eyes are a common condition that occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears evade too quickly, causing the cornea to not be fully lubricated. As a result, the eyes are dry, acne-prone, hot, blurred or sensitive to light. If left untreated, this condition can lead to cornea damage, infections, or a long-term impact on vision.
Air pollution and eye health
Dr. Bhavya Reddy said that smoke, dust and chemicals in the air are the main causes of dry eyes. Fine dust particles, toxic gas and ozone can disrupt tear film, increase tear evaporation and reduce moisture retention. Long-term exposure to polluted air can also affect the oil glands of the eyes, making dry eyes worse.
Symptoms of knowing
Common signs of dry eyes include:
Discomfort, acne, burning, or itchy eyes.
Seeing blurred vision, especially when reading or using a screen.
Red eyes, sensitive to light.
Feeling of mucus in the eyes or unusually tearing.
Pain or discomfort when wearing contact lenses.
How to care for and prevent
Some measures to help reduce the risk and improve dry eyes:
Limit going out when there is high air pollution, or use protective glasses.
Avoid exposure to secondhand smoke and other sources of smoke.
Use an humidifier in the house, especially in the dry season.
Wash your eyes with clean water, use a warm glue to soothe your eyes.
Take regular breaks while using computers or phones.
Supplement foods rich in Omega-3 and essential nutrients for the eyes.
When to see a doctor
If symptoms persist or do not improve after taking topical eye drops, you should see an ophthalmologist. Signs to note include prolonged blurred vision, eye pain, increased tearing or sensitivity to light. Your doctor may prescribe medication or other treatments to maintain natural tear levels and protect the cornea.
Note
Dry eyes are a common problem and can become serious if not properly cared for. Air pollution, both outdoors and indoors, is one of the important causes. However, with reasonable care, dry eyes can be effectively controlled, keeping the eyes healthy and comfortable.
