On July 18, Bac Quang Tri Regional General Hospital said that it had just performed a procedure to remove the IUD for a 70-year-old woman.
Previously, the woman was hospitalized due to prolonged back pain. Through X-ray examination, doctors discovered that a contraceptive ring placed more than 40 years ago was still in the uterus.
According to the patient's sharing, since knowing that the bracelet was still in her body, she has been constantly worried, restless and sleepless.
Doctors said that for cases where the IUD exists for a long time in the uterus but does not cause complications, removing the IUD is not always mandatory. However, after assessing the patient's health and psychological condition, the team decided to perform the IUD removal procedure.
The intervention process encountered many difficulties because the ring had penetrated deep into the uterine muscle after many years. In addition, the patient's uterus has shrunk with age, and the ring is located in a high position, so access is not easy.
The team had to perform each operation carefully to ensure safety for the patient. After the intervention process, doctors successfully removed the IUD from the uterus.
When informed that the procedure was completed, the woman expressed joy and relief after worrying about the ring that had existed in her body for more than 40 years.
Through this case, doctors recommend that women who have had an IUD inserted, especially those who have had an IUD inserted many years ago or are menopausal, should have regular gynecological examinations.
Checking the position of the IUD and consulting a doctor about when to remove the IUD will help detect and prevent possible complications, while limiting anxiety for patients.
