On April 27, according to a report by the Dak Lak Provincial Center for Disease Control (CDC), 2 cases of meningococcal meningitis were recorded in the area, including 1 child patient who died.
The deceased patient is N.D. T. Ê (temporarily residing in Tan An ward, Dak Lak province).
According to family members, because he was still young, he only stayed at home with his parents and had not gone to daycare. On April 23, the patient developed symptoms of runny nose. On April 25, the patient had a high fever, vomiting, and lethargy, so his family took him to Thien Hanh General Hospital for examination. After that, the patient was transferred to Tay Nguyen Regional General Hospital for treatment with a diagnosis of monitoring sepsis, suspected meningococcal infection.
At the Central Highlands Regional General Hospital, the patient was diagnosed with second-degree respiratory failure, monitored for meningococcal sepsis, severe pneumonia, and monitored for meningitis.
Although doctors actively resuscitated and treated him, due to the severe progression of the disease, the patient died at 9:45 am on April 26. The diagnosis of death was septicemia due to acute meningococcal syndrome, pneumonia.
Children have not been vaccinated against meningococcal disease.
On April 26, the Provincial Center for Disease Control took samples from patients and close contacts, sent them to the Tay Nguyen Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology for testing support. The results showed that 2/2 samples were positive for meningococcus, including the patient and his uncle.
The uncle is N.D. Q (residing in Tan An ward, Dak Lak province). On April 27, Mr. Q showed signs of cough, fatigue and was taken to the Department of Infectious Diseases, Tay Nguyen Regional General Hospital for isolation and treatment.
