Master, Doctor Dang Van Hieu - Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine (Hospital E) said that the patient was admitted with a deformed right arm, limited elbow movement. X-ray results showed that the patient had a fracture of the lower third of the right humerus, a serious injury that can have long-term effects if not treated promptly.
The patient was immediately referred for emergency surgery to fix the fracture site, ensuring the ability to move the right arm in the future. The surgical method of bone fixation with screws and plates was applied to help the bone heal quickly and fix firmly. Fortunately, the patient did not have any signs of nerve damage, which is common in cases of complex fractures.
Dr. Hieu explained that although the humerus is the largest bone in the upper limb, it is still at risk of fracture if subjected to strong force, especially in arm wrestling. The sudden twisting force when the elbow is fixed in a bent position can easily cause damage to the lower third of the humerus, which has a weaker structure. Cases of oblique fractures are often complicated, making surgery difficult and increasing the risk of damage to surrounding nerves and blood vessels.
Tricks such as changing the direction of twisting or suddenly increasing the force while playing also increase the risk of fractures. In particular, even if the arm muscles are strong, the bone shape does not change, leading to a high risk of injury when participating in this game.
After surgery, the patient will be instructed to perform exercises to strengthen the muscles, improve the range of motion of the arm and reduce the risk of complications such as stiffness or muscle weakness. Doctors emphasize that this case is a warning about the potential risks when participating in high-impact sports such as arm wrestling, especially when the player does not fully understand the technique or exceeds the limit of strength.
Doctors recommend that to avoid serious injuries, players need to understand the techniques and limits of the body, avoid performing movements that cause great pressure or strong twisting. If there are signs of unusual pain, stop immediately and go to a medical facility for timely diagnosis and treatment, preventing dangerous complications.
