Weather forecast today May 25, the North and Central regions continue to experience intense heat, especially intense in many places. The area from Thanh Hoa to Da Nang and eastern Quang Ngai are forecast to be "hot centers", the common temperature is 37 - 39 degrees C, in some places above 40 degrees C. The North and eastern area from Gia Lai to Lam Dong are commonly 36 - 38 degrees C, in some places above 39 degrees C.
The meteorological agency warns that hot weather in the North will last for about 3 days, and in the Central region it will last until May 28. The risk of fires, explosions, and forest fires is increasing due to hot and dry weather and a sharp increase in electricity demand.
The weather entering a period of intense heat makes the risk of sunstroke and heatstroke in children increase, especially during summer vacation when many families let children participate in outdoor activities, tourism, and picnics.
According to Dr. Le Ngoc Duy, Head of the Emergency and Poison Control Department, National Children's Hospital, young children are the group most susceptible to high temperatures due to incomplete body temperature regulation mechanisms. If not detected and treated promptly, heatstroke can cause many dangerous complications such as increased heart rate, shortness of breath, convulsions, coma, and even life-threatening.
Common signs of sunstroke and heatstroke in children include: High fever, hot and red skin, exhaustion, headache, dizziness, nausea, thirst, rapid breathing or shortness of breath. Some severe cases may experience convulsions, consciousness disorders, or coma.
Experts recommend that when detecting signs of sunstroke in children, it is necessary to quickly take the child to a cool place, loosen clothes, wipe the body with a wet towel, give the child water in small sips if they are still awake and quickly take them to a medical facility if symptoms do not improve.
To prevent sunstroke and heatstroke, parents should limit children from going out during the hot sunny hours from 10 am to 4 pm, put children in cool clothes, replenish enough water, wear hats, wear glasses when going out and increase rest in shady or air-conditioned places.
Parents should not be subjective about abnormal signs of children in hot weather, because early detection and proper treatment are important in protecting children's health and lives.
