Causes and remedies for ear pain in cold weather

Earaches are a common problem during the cold season. Here are some common causes of ear pain and how to treat them.

Reason:

1. Infection

Some people also get earaches from colds. This is because the Eustachian tube connects to the ear, allowing bacteria to travel from the throat to the middle ear. Seek medical attention because this can lead to fluid buildup in the middle ear, which can be serious.

2. Stuffy nose

Any type of blockage in the Eustachian tube that connects the throat to the ear causes pain, and is most common in the winter. Nasal congestion can also be the cause of ear pain.

3. Recurrent coughs and colds

Every time you cough or sneeze, you may feel a slight pressure inside your ear. Therefore, when you have a persistent cold, the pressure will cause irritation or pain in your ear.

4. Sinus

People with sinus problems often experience earaches in the winter due to constant sneezing and coughing. This puts extra pressure on the ears.

5. Cold air

When you go outside in the cold, the nerves in your ear canal are exposed to cold air and react to it with severe pain in or around your ear.

How to fix:

The first and foremost step is to maintain hygiene in your ears. Unclean ears aggravate infections and irritations. Additionally, you can follow the tips mentioned below to relieve ear pain during cold weather:

1. Keep your ears covered and avoid direct exposure to cold air, especially if you live in a cold area.

2. People suffering from sinus problems, cough and cold should be extra cautious and take medication regularly as prescribed by their doctor.

3. Do not use hard objects to clean your ears. Only use clean cotton swabs to do this.

4. Do not use any ear drops without consulting your doctor.

5. Consult a specialist even if you have mild symptoms. Delaying treatment can lead to a more serious infection.

6. Children need to take more care and clean their ears because they are susceptible to ear, nose and throat diseases.

7. If you use pain relievers, allergy medications and antibiotics, you need to have a doctor's guidance.

8. When your earache is caused by cold weather, you can also treat it by applying a warm compress with a wet towel.

9. Keep your ears dry and clean, as the pain may be caused by water in the ear.

10. In cold weather, try to keep your ears warm by wearing a hat, headband or scarf.
