Why do some people have difficulty breathing while lying down?
According to Dr. Nagesh Dhadge, consultant pulmonologist at Manipal Hospital, Baner, Pune (India), sleep apnea is a common problem that many people may encounter. This condition can occur for many different reasons, from cardiovascular disease to lung problems or factors related to living habits. Here are some of the main causes of sleep apnea.
Cardiovascular disease
One of the main causes of sleep apnea is heart-related diseases. When the heart cannot pump blood effectively, it can cause fluid accumulation in the lungs and cause difficulty breathing, especially when lying down. Cardiovascular diseases such as:
Heart attack: When the heart does not pump blood effectively, the pressure in the lungs increases, causing a feeling of shortness of breath.
High lung blood pressure: When the pressure in the arteries and lungs increases, it can cause shortness of breath, especially when lying down, because lying down can increase pressure in the lungs.
Lung disease
Lung problems are also a common cause of difficulty breathing when lying down. Some diseases that can be mentioned include:
asthma: When lying down, asthma symptoms can become more severe, causing difficulty breathing. This may be because the respiratory tract is easily irritated when lying down.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): Patients with COPD often have difficulty breathing, and lying down can make this condition worse.
Pneumonia or infection: When the lungs are infected, there can be fluid accumulation, which can interfere with breathing and cause difficulty breathing while lying down.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus. When lying down, acid can easily rise up and irritate the throat, leading to a feeling of shortness of breath. This condition often occurs at night and causes the patient to feel choked or have difficulty breathing.
Obesity
People who are overweight or obese may have difficulty breathing when lying down because their body weight puts pressure on the diaphragm and lungs. This pressure makes breathing more difficult, especially when lying on your back. This can reduce the lung's ability to expand and make breathing difficult.
Anxiety and stress
Another cause that makes patients feel short of breath when lying down is anxiety, stress or panic attacks. When anxious or stressed, the body can react by causing a feeling of shortness of breath, especially when the patient tries to lie down to rest.
Sleep apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious condition when the respiratory organs temporarily stop working while sleeping. This can lead to a feeling of lack of oxygen, causing shortness of breath when the patient lies down and wakes up in the morning. This is a condition that needs to be diagnosed and treated promptly.
