Thyroid dysfunction and cardiovascular risk

Thyroid dysfunction, especially in older adults, can increase the risk of serious cardiovascular problems.

According to Dr. Sudheer Koganti, consultant cardiologist at Citizens Speciality Hospital, Hyderabad (India), the thyroid gland, a small gland in the neck, regulates important functions such as metabolism, cardiovascular control and bone maintenance. When the thyroid gland does not function normally, such as hypothyroidism (lack of thyroid hormones) or hyperthyroidism (excessive thyroid hormone), it will seriously affect cardiovascular health, especially in the elderly.

Thyroid Cube and its effects on the cardiovascular system

Thyroid regurgitation makes the body work faster, including the heart. This can increase your heart rate, your heart's oxygen needs, and cause symptoms like a rapid heartbeat or throbbing. In older adults, these symptoms can be mild, easily overlooked, and can lead to more serious cardiovascular problems, especially in people with coronary artery disease.

Thyroid and cardiovascular effects

Hypothyroidism is common in people over 60 years old, especially women, but is often not diagnosed in time. Hypothyroidism weakens the heart muscle, leading to reduced blood pumping efficiency, causing heart failure and impaired central function. Hypothyroidism can harden blood vessels, causing high blood pressure, shortness of breath and slow heart rate.

General harm to the heart

Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can cause arrhythmia, dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis and heart failure, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death, especially in the elderly.

The importance of diagnosis and treatment

Early detection and treatment of thyroid dysfunction are very important, helping to control the risk of cardiovascular disease. Elderly people with a family history of thyroid disease or cardiovascular health problems should have thyroid function tests to protect overall health.
