MSc. Dr. Nghiem Trung Hung - Department of Andrology, 108 Central Military Hospital - shared that the thyroid is a small organ located in the front of the neck, which functions to produce hormones T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine), playing an important role in regulating metabolism and maintaining energy for the body.
These hormones not only affect the cardiovascular, nervous, and digestive systems but also directly affect the male reproductive system. Thyroid hormone balance plays an essential role in testicular function and sperm production. When the thyroid is disrupted (hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism), male reproductive health can be seriously affected, even leading to infertility.
Thyroid disease and the risk of infertility in men can be mentioned as affecting sperm quality.
Thyroid hormones have a direct impact on the menstrual cycle. When the thyroid is dysfunctional, sperm quality can decline, affecting the ability to conceive. Studies have shown that hyperthyroidism can increase sperm production speed but cause sperm deformation and poor mobility.
Hypothyroidism reduces sperm count and quality, reducing the ability to fertilize naturally.
Decreased testosterone: The thyroid gland affects the secretion of testosterone hormone, which plays an important role in the physiology and reproduction of men. When thyroid hormones are out of balance, testosterone levels can also decrease, leading to problems such as: Decreased sexual desire; erectile dysfunction; Poor sperm quality, high risk of infertility.
sexual dysfunction: Thyroid diseases can increase the risk of erectile dysfunction, especially in people with hyperthyroidism. When the body produces too many thyroid hormones, the sympathetic nervous system is over-stimulated, leading to erectile dysfunction and premature hesitation. In contrast, hypothyroidism causes a decrease in sex hormone levels, causing reduced appetite and difficulty maintaining an erection.
Dr. Nghiem Trung Hung pointed out warning symptoms to note such as men need to pay attention to unusual signs that may be related to thyroid disease, especially if they are having reproductive problems: Sudden weight changes of unknown cause; Fatigue, dry skin, intolerance to cold ( manifestations of hypothyroidism); Rapid weight loss, intolerance to heat, rapid heartbeat ( manifestations of hyperthyroidism); Reduced sexual desire, erectile dysfunction; Slow labor despite normal sex.
According to Dr. Nghiem Trung Hung, fortunately, reproductive problems caused by thyroid disease can be cured if detected and treated promptly by taking thyroid hormone-adjusting drugs; Monitoring and regulating testosterone levels; Scientific lifestyle changes...
