Notes when using pomegranate juice or orange juice for good for the liver

Pomegranate juice and orange juice both provide many antioxidant compounds; using moderate amounts is good for the liver.

According to Prof. Dr. Vuong Ky - Head of Department of Liver Diseases 1, Beijing Dia Dan Hospital, China, lipid metabolism disorders, a high-energy diet, lack of exercise, drinking too much alcohol and obesity can all increase the burden on the liver. Notably, fatty liver is not simply a condition of "fat in the liver" but can progress to hepatitis, cirrhosis, cirrhosis if not controlled.

Pomegranate contains many polyphenols and antioxidant compounds. A clinical trial on 65 people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, participated in drinking 250ml of pomegranate juice or orange juice daily for 12 weeks, and followed a low-energy diet.

The results showed that both groups had reduced liver enzymes and BMI. However, the group using pomegranate juice had a significant increase in the body's antioxidant capacity.

A meta-analysis of 9 clinical trials also noted that long-term use of pomegranates can help improve some liver enzymes, especially in obese people or people with metabolic disorders.

A recent study on people with fatty liver disease related to metabolic disorders showed that eating whole oranges daily for 4 weeks was associated with a decrease in fatty liver levels. However, this study used whole oranges, not orange juice.

However, experts warn that absorbing too much fructose can increase fat accumulation in the liver. When eating whole fruits, fiber helps slow down the absorption process and create a feeling of fullness. Meanwhile, juice helps consume a larger amount of fruit in a short time and easily puts more sugar into the body. Therefore, you should not drink too much juice, including 100% pure juice.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tao Hong, Deputy Head of the Department of Endocrinology - Metabolism, Anzhen Hospital, Beijing, China - also emphasized that for people with fatty liver, controlling the amount of energy put into the body and increasing exercise are important measures. Experts warn that even fructose from fruits with high sugar content, if consumed excessively, can be converted into fat in the liver.
