Gout patients should eat pineapple properly to help lower uric acid

Quang Minh |

Pineapple is a fruit rich in vitamin C, with low purine content. For gout patients, pineapple can help support lower uric acid.

Gout forms when the level of uric acid in the blood increases, leading to urate crystals accumulating in the joints and causing inflammation and pain. Therefore, a diet to support gout control often focuses on limiting high purine sources and especially excess fructose.

Pineapple is not a food rich in purines such as organs, some types of seafood or red meat. Notably, pineapple also provides vitamin C.

Pineapple belongs to the group of fruits with relatively high vitamin C and lower fructose content than some other sweet fruits.

When eating pineapple whole, users still get fiber and it takes time to chew, thereby making it easier to control portion sizes. Conversely, pressing many pieces of pineapple into a glass of water can make natural sugar consumed faster.

It should be noted that consuming too much fructose, especially from soft drinks and fruit juices, may be related to increased uric acid.

Therefore, instead of drinking pineapple juice or pineapple smoothie mixed with sugar, gout patients can choose fresh pineapple slices to eat as part of a snack.

A small serving of about 100-150 g of fresh pineapple/time is a cautious approach, especially for people who need to control blood sugar or weight.

Pineapple also contains bromelain - a group of enzymes studied for anti-inflammatory properties.

Pineapple has a natural sweetness, so sugar is not needed. Gout patients should avoid dishes such as pineapple juice with sugar, pineapple soaked in sugar, pineapple syrup or pineapple smoothie with condensed milk.

Weight control is also meaningful for gout. A diet high in added sugar, sweet drinks and excess energy can be detrimental to metabolic health, while obesity and metabolic syndrome often come with a higher risk of gout.

Therefore, the simplest way is to eat fresh pineapple, without adding sugar, with a moderate portion and change with many other types of vegetables and fruits.

Pineapple is only a small part of the diet. Gout patients should pay attention to limiting alcohol, foods rich in purines and excessive amounts of fructose; and adjusting lifestyle and using urate-reducing drugs when indicated.

Therefore, a suitable meal may include fresh pineapple with a moderate portion, plenty of vegetables, whole grains, suitable protein sources and filtered water. Patients should also limit alcohol, sugary drinks, organs and foods with high purine content.
