On May 26, Vietnam - Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital (Quang Tri province) said that the hospital's interdisciplinary doctors had just successfully coordinated to handle a case of a female patient who had a duck bone pierce the esophageal wall.
Previously, at about 11:15 pm on May 25, the Emergency Department received patient T.T. H (born 1952, residing in Dong Hoi ward, Quang Tri province). After dinner, the patient developed a difficulty swallowing, pain in the neck area, so he continuously hooked his throat. When the pain increased, the patient was taken to the hospital.
The patient was indicated for ear, nose and throat endoscopy but no foreign object was detected, then transferred to the Department of Gastroenterology for monitoring and treatment.
According to Doctor CKII Nguyen Duy Thach - Head of the Department of Gastroenterology - Clinical Hematology, Vietnam - Cuba Dong Hoi Friendship Hospital, upon admission, the patient had increased phlegm and pain in the neck area. Because the patient had just eaten, it was not possible to perform digestive endoscopy to find the foreign object immediately, doctors infused fluids, used pain relievers and antibiotics.
By the morning of May 26, the digestive endoscopy process discovered a foreign object, a long bone fragment, piercing through the esophagus wall. The Department of Gastroenterology and 5 specialties of the hospital consulted and agreed on a treatment plan.
This is a dangerous emergency condition. If the complication is acute, it can cause ventricular pneumonia, shortness of breath, respiratory failure. Long-term complications can cause abscesses. If not treated appropriately and promptly, the patient is at risk of life-threatening" - Dr. Thach said.
After consultation, doctors of the Department of Gastroenterology performed endoscopy to remove the foreign object, and at the same time closed the wound to limit complications.
Currently, the patient's health is stable and continues to be monitored and treated at the hospital.
