On February 28, Quang Binh General Hospital (Quang Tri province) said that the unit had just successfully operated to remove 2 rare strange tumors for a female patient.
Previously, patient D. T. R (66 years old, residing in Minh Hoa commune, Quang Tri province) was admitted to the hospital in a state of persistent pain in the lower abdomen, greatly affecting daily life.
Through examination and paraclinical examination, doctors discovered 2 tumors in the patient's body, each tumor about 3.5cm in size. Recognizing this as a complex case due to tumors sticking tightly to surrounding tissues, intestines, ovaries and uterus, the team decided to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to remove the tumors simultaneously.
During the surgery, doctors had to carefully remove the tumor in the abdominal cavity with adhesive appendix in the right iliac fossa; and at the same time remove and remove the ovarian tumor with the left appendix.
After removing the entire tumor, the doctor performed a surgical examination. The results showed a strange tumor in the ovary containing a hair bun inside. Meanwhile, the tumor in the abdominal cavity showed signs of calcification, as hard as bone.
MSc.BS Vo Truong Giang - Head of General Surgery Department said that teratoma is a rare type of tumor, formed from multi-functional germ cells. This type of tumor can contain mixed tissues such as hair, teeth, fingernails, bone tissue or cartilage tissue.
According to Dr. Giang, it is very rare for a patient to simultaneously have a teratoma in the abdominal cavity and an ovarian teratoma. The tumors of this patient are abnormally attached to the surrounding organs and tissues and lie on both sides of the abdominal cavity, causing many challenges when having to remove them at the same time during surgery.
However, the team successfully performed laparoscopic surgery, removing 2 tumors without causing damage to adjacent parts, ensuring safety for the patient.
After the treatment and post-operative monitoring process, the patient's health condition recovered well, and the indicators were stable.
Dr. Giang recommends that women need to be examined early when abnormal signs appear such as prolonged abdominal pain, menstrual disorders or other abnormal manifestations. Timely detection and treatment will help limit the risk of complications, protect health and life.
