Impact on inflammation and digestive health
A 2025 study published in the journal Life showed that people with ulcerative colitis had a significant improvement in their symptoms after six weeks of drinking 60 ml of sour cherry juice per day. Calprotectin levels in stools, the index reflecting inflammation, were significantly reduced compared to the group using fake drugs.
This result shows that natural anti-inflammatory compounds such as anthocyanin may become a supplementary choice in addition to traditional treatments, says Dr Jonathan Sinclair, lecturer at the School of Medicine, Social Work and Sports, University of Central Lancashire (UK).
Anthocyanin is a polyphenol that gives cherries a dark red color, and is also found in grapes, plums and purple cabbage. When entering the intestines, anthocyanins are broken down by gut bacteria, creating compounds that are beneficial for digestion and reduce inflammation. However, according to Dolores Woods, a nutritionist at UTHealth Houston (USA), there is currently not enough evidence to confirm for sure that drinking sour cherry juice will improve long-term gut health.
Risks from sugar and drug interactions
In addition to its benefits, sour cherry juice is also high in sugar. Woods warns: For people with ulcerative colitis, a diet rich in sugar can cause abdominal discomfort. Eating whole cherries is better because they have more fiber to aid digestion".
In addition, this juice can interact with some anti-inflammatory drugs and blood thinners. Therefore, experts recommend that people receiving medical treatment should discuss with their doctor before adding it to their diet.
One point to note is that there is currently limited scientific evidence. The latest study was conducted on only 35 people and funded partly by the Cherry Marketing Institute, which can easily distance the results. A 2021 study, also funded by this organization, did not find a significant effect on the intestines in healthy people.
In addition to affecting digestion, sour cherry juice is also promoted to help improve sleep, enhance cognition and restore muscles. However, these benefits are currently only at observed levels and there is no solid scientific basis.
Sour cherry juice is a drink rich in antioxidants, promising to bring some health benefits, especially for patients with enteritis. However, experts recommend using it in moderation, prioritizing eating whole fruits, and always consulting a doctor to avoid unwanted risks.
