1. Sleep apnea
Overweight and obese people are prone to narrowed airways, large tonsils compressing causing apnea or decreased breathing for 10 seconds or more. Patients may be startled, breathing rapidly, disrupting sleep. Severe cases require weight loss or surgery. In addition, central sleep apnea can occur when weight gain is rapid, because the brain does not send breathing control signals.
2. Reduced ventilation due to obesity
The patient's condition is not breathing fast and deeply enough, causing oxygen supply to be insufficient, and CO2 in the blood to rise. Consequences may include heart failure, leg edema, fatigue, increased risk of sleep apnea, and even respiratory failure.
3. Snoring
Often caused by airway obstruction. snoring can be loud, intermittent, accompanied by suffocation while sleeping.
4. Restless legs syndrome
It is a chronic motor disorder, causing discomfort in the legs, forcing the patient to move continuously. Symptoms include itching, pain, a feeling like ants crawling, usually worse at night. The risk increases in overweight, obese people and factors such as iron deficiency, diabetes, venous insufficiency or drug side effects.
