The National Hospital for Tropical Diseases has just rescued a 69-year-old female patient in Hanoi suffering from Dengue hemorrhagic fever with the most severe progression on the background of type 2 diabetes. The patient fell into dengue fever shock, acidosis, severe blood clotting disorder and had to undergo continuous blood filtration to maintain life.
According to the family, the patient had a fever, fatigue and back pain for 3 days before being admitted to the hospital. By the third day, the fatigue increased, and consciousness gradually slowed down, so he was taken to the doctor. Although no typical signs of bleeding appeared, the patient quickly developed circulatory failure and was transferred to the Central Tropical Diseases Hospital for emergency treatment overnight.
MSc.BS Tran Van Bac - Deputy Head of the Emergency Department - said that the patient was admitted to the hospital in critical condition with low blood pressure, rapid pulse, and reduced consciousness. Tests showed a deep decrease in platelets, signaling blood clotting disorders and severe respiratory failure.
Doctors urgently performed endotracheal intubation, mechanical ventilation, continuous blood filtration, blood transfusion and intensive resuscitation. After 5 hours of emergency treatment, blood pressure temporarily stabilized, but the prognosis was still very hesitant because the patient continued to bleed and had many complications.
From this case, doctors recommend that elderly people and people with underlying diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease should be especially vigilant against dengue fever. When there are signs of fever, fatigue, and body aches, people should go to medical facilities early for examination, avoiding late hospitalization leading to dangerous complications.
