According to Dr. Suman Yadav, Dental and maxillofacial surgeon, Director of the Oral Care Center & Head of Healing Tree Hospital, Indirapuram (India), poor oral hygiene can lead to many serious health problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, lung disease and even affecting pregnancy. Proper oral care is an important part of protecting our overall health.
Arterial fibromyalgia
Arterial fibrosis is a disease that causes narrowing of the arteries due to the accumulation of fat and cholesterol. Patients with periodontitis and poor oral hygiene often experience severe gingivitis and sepsis. This stimulates the formation of atherosclerosis, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
Lung disease
Bacteria in the mouth can enter the lower respiratory tract, causing lung diseases such as pneumonia, emphysema and chronic bronchitis. This risk can even occur in healthy people, when they accidentally inhale secretions from the throat while sleeping.
Diabetes
Diabetes can negatively affect oral health, while severe periodontitis increases blood sugar levels. Studies show that people with diabetes are at higher risk of periodontitis than those without the disease. However, if diabetes is well controlled, this risk will decrease.
Complications of pregnancy
Pregnant women may experience dental problems such as cavities, enlargement, brittle teeth and gingivitis. Hormonal changes during pregnancy cause capillary dilation and gingivitis. Oral infections can also cause uterine contractions and premature birth. Therefore, oral care during pregnancy is very important.
Note
Dr. Suman Yadav says that oral health not only affects the mouth cavity but can also lead to serious systemic diseases. Therefore, maintaining proper oral hygiene and regular oral health checking is very important to prevent long-term health problems.
