Below are some side effects of chili peppers as reported by nutritionist Dr. Archana Batra (India).
1. Causes burning sensation
Chili peppers contain capsaicin, which gives them their spicy, hot taste. Eating too much chili can cause a burning sensation in the mouth, throat, and stomach, causing discomfort.
2. Stomach ache and diarrhea
Eating too many chili peppers can lead to stomach pain, bloating or diarrhea, especially in people with sensitive digestive systems or conditions like irritable bowel syndrome.
According to a study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, chili peppers may aggravate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, especially in people who are not used to eating chili peppers.
3. Potential cancer risk
Eating too much capsaicin over a long period of time can irritate the stomach lining and potentially increase the risk of gallbladder and stomach cancer, according to a study published in the International Journal of Cancer.
